Each time I enter a home for a newborn session, I can always feel a sense of the change that has happened, the shift from the new little life that has been welcomed. In every home I visit, the feeling is different; for this newborn session, there was an overwhelming sense of calm and peace. As I watched the new parents interact with their long-anticipated rainbow baby, I couldn’t help but notice how natural they both were in their new role. The overwhelming love they felt for their precious baby girl was palpable, the joy of their answered prayer visible in every interaction: the way they held her so gently, spoke to her so soothingly, calmly reassured her when she cried — it was impossible not to feel their amazement over finally being able to hold their little girl in their arms!
This was my first newborn session for a rainbow baby after welcoming our own this past January, and I cannot describe what a joy it was for me to be able to capture this time of joy for another family after they had experienced a loss. Kate and Chris are just the sweetest couple, and I loved being able to talk about our common experiences of loss, expecting our rainbow babies, and bringing them into the world! I asked the two of them if it was surreal to finally be holding their daughter after waiting for her for so long, and they agreed that it absolutely was.
I also cannot talk about their session without mentioning their daughter’s Harry Potter themed nursery! I always love seeing the thought and details that parents put into creating a space for their babies, especially when they incorporate their own passions and interests! Kate, in her words, is a huge Harry Potter nerd, and I loved all the little details in the room that were nods to the books, especially the owls, the little Mirror of Erised, and prints of Hogwarts! I think my most favorite feature of the room, though, was the beautiful handmade quilt and pillow made by a friend of theirs embroidered with quotes from the books!
Kate and Chris — I cannot express what an honor it was to be able to capture some of your first days with your precious rainbow baby. Thank you for welcoming me into your home and for so openly sharing your story of loss with me. I know how special rainbow babies are, and your sweet girl is so fortunate to have such loving parents as you to teach her and show her the world!
