The longer I’m on this journey of motherhood, the more often I reflect on the fact that my expectations of how things are going to go with a toddler very seldom match the reality as it plays out in my day to day life. However, one of the most beautiful things has been, as I like to put it, “embracing the chaos.” Although it can definitely be frustrating when things don’t go the way I’ve envisioned or planned, I’m constantly reminding myself that everything in the world is new and different for my little guy, and he’s just so excited to learn and experience and discover it all. And witnessing that? It’s such a beautiful, wonderful privilege. So when I get the privilege of watching those moments and capturing them for another family, it just about makes my photographer heart explode with joy!
It is one of my greatest joys to photograph the same family year after year, capturing each stage of their life and documenting how everyone grows and changes over time! I have been photographing Nora and Jalal’s family since they were expecting their first baby, and it has been such a privilege to watch their two boys grow up over the last several years!
I had such a fun afternoon with their sweet family of four at the beautiful Edisto Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg — like any typical toddler or pre-schooler, the two boys were far more enchanted with leaves, rocks, sticks, and exploring in nature than posing for photos, but it was so fun to be able to capture that curiosity! When I look at the photos from their session, I can see their budding independence, their inquisitive natures, and their little minds learning and growing every moment!
Another one of my favorite things about this session was that Nora and Jalal chose the same location where we took their family photos last year, which gives an incredible perspective of how much their two sweet boys have grown and changed in the last year! I keep thinking how fun it will be to look at these photos side by side with the ones from the previous year and think about all the life that has happened in the space between them!
Nora and Jalal, thank you so much for trusting me once again to capture these precious memories for your family! I just love watching your family grow, and I hope you look back on these photos as a sweet reminder of this time in your lives.
